With attendance at meetings moving in the wrong direction, maybe part of the problem isn't all related to the economy, but, the quality of the education and the speakers. With most meeting's education being selected by the Board, are most Board's just out of touch? A new trend is coming into focus and that is to have your meeting's educational agenda be selected by your Members and not by your Board. There is already evidence that member generated meetings are attracting more attendees than Board generated meetings. What are your thoughts? Is this the future? or Is this too much of a radical change?

I think the problem is both- Companies are cutting budgets and that is preventing quite a number of people from attending events. (Myself included)

I also think that many times the selection committees continue to cover the same topics (slightly revised) and utilize the same speakers- so if you attend an annual event over and over the content can get pretty boring.

IfI have limited educational dollars- and I can only attend one educational event instead of multiple events- or if I have to pay out of my own pocket- I would choose to attend those sessions that offer something other than the same old same old. Which is probably why you are seeing increased attendance when a change is made from the Board to the Members. "Fresh eyes" always help to keep things interesting!
